In the book "Zen in the Art of Archery" the student is learning when to let go of the arrow. The master tells him to study the bamboo leaf as it bends lower and lower under the weight of the snow. Suddenly the snow slips to the ground without the leaf having stirred. The shot, the master says, must fall from the archer like the snow from the leaf, before he even thinks it.
What Bill Albert saw in his daily walking-around-life was that snow resting on the leaf and that leaf bending under the weight.
What Bill did here was let go of his observations to have them fall onot paper, into haiku, with the fluency and immediacy of that to which he gave witness. Read more
